We admit it. Any online jeweler or web-based jewelry store who says they don’t like BlueNile is just jealous (or lying).  We know we can’t compete. We don’t want to.  AND we love what they do (and have done) for the jewelry industry.  

For instance, they commissioned a Harris Interactive study that showed Valentine’s Day jewlery gifts are still desirable.  We read the press release on marketwatch.  More importantly, they gave a voice to consumers like you and reiterated what we have been saying in our messaging as well:

Valentine’s Day is getting closer. We’re not overly sentimental people, but the proximity of the holiday for sweethearts causes me (diamondgirl) to reflect on how I met goldenboy. It was not love at first sight, although he is handsome. It took time for us to get to know each other, to appreciate each other.

How About Some Quality Time?

We’re newlyweds so there’s no shortage of kisses in our house!  But we’re also very busy working folks and sometimes we just have to make time for quality time together.  (Disclaimer: This does NOT mean being in the same room together in front of our respective laptops and/or the TV, nor does dinner count, because the primary purpose is eating, not talking!) It can become more of a challenge than we like to admit–and maybe that’s BECAUSE we share the same physical space.  (I’d be interested in hearing our readers’ thoughts on this subject too: Is living together the difference here?)

So this need for “quality time” got me thinking about how it works in business. As an online retailer of a fine jewelry item, we don’t get the same quality time with our customers as stores do.  Instead, we rely on feedback via email and posts to this blog in hopes of having those important conversations (NOT the equivalent of “How was your day, dear?”) with you–the browsers, shoppers, searchers, lurkers, fans, friends, skeptics, and rivals of diamond link bracelets.   But, like any relationship, unless we communicate our needs, we’ll just sit in front of our computers updating LinkedIn, watch TV endlessly, or play Wii for hours only to realize one day that quality time opportunities have passed us by.
